Physician Spotlight — Chad J. Thomas, MD — Mohs Surgeon
Tri-Cities Medical News, May 2012
"I feel fortunate to practice as a subspecialist so close to my hometown," shared Chad Thomas, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with Dermatology Associates. Thomas, who grew up in Greeneville, Tenn., was the first and only fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon in Kingsport. Nationwide, very few dermatologists pursue the fellowship because of the extra year of training required.
Named for its originator, Dr. Frederic Mohs, Mohs surgery is a specialized technique for removing skin cancer, particularly of the head and neck or for reoccurring cancers. Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate of skin cancer treatments because all the surgical margins are examined microscopically in office, and because there is no need to take a large amount of healthy skin in Mohs surgery, the size of the wound left after tumor removal is minimized, offering a better cosmetic result.
An outpatient procedure, Mohs is performed under local anaesthesia, reducing the risks associated with prolonged general anaesthesia. During the surgery, the clearly visible skin cancer is removed and then a very thin layer of normal appearing skin is also taken and mapped so that the surgeon is able to determine the corresponding margins on the patient.
